To be eligible to win an Oscar© all movies must be available for theatrical release. In 2019, the Oscar© Nominated Short Films release went into more than 600 theaters across the US, garnering reviews in every major news outlet, from the Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Deadline to the New York Times and Huffington Post. It was also released in over 100 locations around the world, including Canada, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Mexico, Chile, China and Australia among others, making it a truly international release.

Starting just a few days before the Oscar© ceremony, the nominated films in the Live Action and Animation categories become available across cable and satellite pay-per-view services in the US and online download platforms around the world, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and Google Play.
The night before the Oscar© ceremony, ShortsTV hosts the Shorts Awards in Los Angeles, honouring all the nominated filmmakers as well as noted industry talent who have made significant contributions to short filmmaking.
The event is the world’s biggest celebration of short film and is attended by Academy members and Governors, industry talent, and press from key entertainment news sources. It is designed to highlight the nominated filmmakers, who are the stars of the show, giving them the opportunity to speak to many of the Hollywood press and also to promote the release during its last weeks in theaters.
